Getting Fit Without a Gym

05 Jun 2014

I am a self-confessed gym rat. To me, there is something incredibly soothing about a gym environment. I could spend hours watching reality shows on E! and listening to my Britney Spears Pandora station while on the elliptical or treadmill. It’s not as though I’m particularly ecstatic about working out, but I love being able to do something that is good for me while not feeling as though I’m wasting time. Unfortunately, gym memberships are not cheap, and if you don’t live by a health club, they can be a huge time investment. On days when I simply don’t have time to hang out at the gym, or when all of the machines are taken, I will typically resort to doing a workout from a blog or Youtube. A couple of days ago I was surprised to find that a quick HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout from one of the Instagram accounts I follow had me absolutely exhausted.

In our busy schedules and heavy reliance on the internet, we often forget to take care of ourselves. Although in an ideal world, we would all have time to exercise for an hour each day, this is not reality. I believe that we can make the most of our limited leisure time by getting in a quick workout that won’t cost us much time or money!

Youtube Workouts

❖ Blogilates ( Is a channel run by Cassey Ho, a certified pilates instructor. She has a very outgoing, upbeat personality but will immediately make you have a love-hate relationship with her workouts. While pilates sounds almost easy, these workouts, which range from programs for “beginners” to HIIT, will make anyone sore the next day. Cassey also gives nutrition advice in her videos, and even posts amazing healthy recipes.

❖ Tone It Up ( Is a channel run by two personal trainers, Karena and Katrina. The two trainers release new videos all the time with challenging but relatively short exercises and also have a nutrition program for those looking to get healthier. Karena and Katrina have also expanded their business and are selling a protein powder called Perfect Fit and have a TV show on Bravo called Toned Up. I would highly recommend these workouts for anyone who wants to have more fun with their daily exercise. All of these videos are fun, conversational and have a laid-back, beachy vibe.

Workout DVDs

❖ Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred (sold at Target, and $6 total for 3 videos on Amazon Prime) This DVD is unique because of its interval-style training that will help increase heart rate and strengthen muscles in a very short amount of time. This is a 3-level program in which you are recommended to do 10 days consecutively of one video before transferring to the next. Each video is harder than the next and will only take about 20 minutes to do. The workout combines circuits of 3 minutes of strength training, 2 minutes of high intensity cardio, and one minute of abdominal exercises. The program is designed to speed up the metabolism for a long period of time and build muscle.

❖ Brazil Butt Lift (around $70 to buy on is a bit pricey, but has a very high approval from customers. The program is designed by trainer Leandro Carvalho, a trainer for many celebrities and fitness models. His workouts are specifically created to strengthen the glutes and legs while not creating “bulky” muscle. This program is also very beneficial to anyone who finds typical at home workouts to be a bit dull, because the exercises are fun and dance-like, inspired by the fun atmosphere of Brazil.

Instagram Fitness Accounts and Other Online Resources

❖Sophie Gray (@wayofgray on Instagram and Sophie is a certified personal trainer and has designed quick but incredibly strenuous workouts to increase metabolism and build lean muscle. She recommends doing her 15-30 minute long HIIT routines about 4 times a week and eating a healthy diet. Sophie has a few of her workouts posted on her instagram account for followers to try for free, but her ebook full of workouts as well as her favorite healthy foods is sold online for $10.00. After trying one of her workouts, I was absolutely exhausted and dripping with sweat but I noticed a major change in my metabolism the following days. Sophie’s workouts have been proven to torch 400 calories in under half an hour and can leave the metabolism elevated for days afterwards.

None of these workouts are easy by any means! All of these resources will help you get stronger and healthier, but when doing a workout that may be less than 30 minutes, quality is key. In my opinion, it is much awesome to get in a tough but time-thrifty workout in. Your day will be much better after exercising, I promise!
