How Stressed Are You?
Have you ever woken up in the morning only to feel like you need to get straight back in bed after your morning coffee? Yup, me too. Today was one of those days where I woke up, practiced yoga and taught a beautiful class down by the beach then headed home by 11am. I had the wonderful intentions of going for a run, going to the gym afterwards and finishing off the day doing some work while basking in the beautiful sun. That sounded like the perfect Sunday if you ask me. So what happened you ask?
Well, I got home sat on my couch for a few minutes and ended up not moving. All day. I mean really, I didn’t move all day long. The only time I got up was to get a pillow from the bed, make a salad, and to refill my water. Other than that I laid on the couch and watched movie after movie and you know what, it felt damn good.
It got me to thinking about motivation, adrenal fatigue, and listening to your body.
How stressed are you?
We all live these busy lives where we are constantly being overly stimulated whether it’s from coffee, our phones, TV’s, computers, people needing things from us and our need to respond to everyone all at once. It’s a lot to take on. Add to that some work more than one job, others go to school, we don’t have enough time to cook our own healthy meals, we drink alcohol, we stay up late at night and wake up early and feel we need to keep ourselves constantly busy.
This type of lifestyle can lead to burn out and hard core adrenal fatigue, which is most commonly associated with prolonged stress (whether it’s physical, emotional, or psychological).
Do you answer yes to any of these symptoms?
- feeling tired for no reason, constant fatigue
- having trouble getting up in the morning, no matter what time you fall asleep
- getting ill or rundown often
- feeling more awake and energetic after 6pm
- craving sweet and salty foods
If so, then this is a likely sign that you are too stressed in your life. There is no simple cure all pill to fix this (nor is there one for anything in life), it’s about balancing your life, removing some of the stress while increasing things that are relaxing.
The reason that I decided to write all of this was because while I sat here on my couch today, I started feeling extremely guilty that I wasn’t out doing things. Being busy and productive. I felt bad for not going for a run, not being outside, not doing anything really. It’s exactly this that has led me to not only get run down and extremely tired, but it’s also these feelings that have prevented me from enjoying an off day of just sitting, relaxing and doing what it is my body needs. Rest. It’s so easy to forget how wonderful it is to just sit, be, and do nothing.
When was the last time you did absolutely nothing?
I challenge you to take some time for yourself to relax. Take a bath this week. Light some candles, turn the lights down and read a book. Turn your phone off, TV off, laptop off and write a letter to a friend. Try to do something that doesn’t involve electronics, rather get outdoors in nature, be with loved ones, paint, or do nothing. Absolutely nothing.
