Clean Candy Corn Parfait

DESSERTS

Happy Halloween!!

The holidays are officially here, and to kick off the holiday season is the spookiest and second-most gluttonous holiday (second only to Thanksgiving). While Halloween can be an exciting holiday, especially if you love dressing up as much as I do, it can also be an anxiety-inducing holiday due to the abundance of candy and sugary treats available throughout October. Unfortunately, a couple binges during Halloween can unknowingly set you up for a “just one more” / guilt spiral that lasts until January 1. To help combat this, I am going to share with you a few tips on sticking to your goals this Halloween, plus a Clean Candy Corn Parfait recipe that will be sure to satisfy that sweet tooth. Also if you haven’t already, don’t forget to check out my free Halloween recipe E-books for more ideas 🙂

Your Body on Candy:

Candy is one of those tricky treats (see what I did there?) because it quickly spikes your blood sugar and then causes a subsequent crash, which is why you feel super energized for 15 minutes after eating candy and then immediately crave more. Our bodies are designed to maintain steady blood nutrient levels throughout the day in order to keep all our systems working efficiently. When you put your blood sugar through these large spikes and drops, your body looks to replenish the blood sugar as quickly as possible, which unfortunately results in cravings for more sugar. Additionally, these spikes and drops mess with your hormone production, negatively affecting your mood, long-term energy levels, skin, sleep quality, weight and fat storage, among other things.

If you’re like me, you may have started to realize that binges, negative self-perception and body shame tend to be exacerbated by eating processed foods. The reverse is also true. The more you eat processed foods, especially candy, the more you’ll find yourself feeling down, seeing yourself negatively and feeling unmotivated to stick to your clean eating goals. So if you can relate to this and are feeling anxious about clean eating this holiday season, don’t worry. There is a solution, and it doesn’t involve giving up candy for good.

The Solution:

If you have a sweet tooth and shudder at the idea of giving up candy, especially around Halloween, you will be relieved to know that the solution is not to give up candy completely. While eating candy does mess with your blood sugar, it is important to remember that the more you label candy and other processed foods as “bad” or “off-limits”, the more you will find yourself binging on those exact foods. The trick is to incorporate candy in moderation, and with the intention of fully enjoying every bite. So this year, instead of mindlessly eating out of a bowl or shamefully binging in the middle of the night (hey, we’ve all been there), try portioning out exactly what you are craving and sitting down to fully and mindfully enjoy what you are eating.

Also, keep in mind that if you find yourself craving more candy, even after you’ve mindfully enjoyed a treat, the best thing to do is to eat vegetables and a protein/carb source, like quinoa or veggies and hummus, because these foods will stabilize your blood sugar, rather than spike it again.  And finally, if you do binge on candy, do not feel bad! Just find a way to get back on track with your clean eating as soon as possible.

This recipe is an example of how you can make a little of your favorite treat go a long way. The sweetness of the candy corn is enhanced by the coconut milk whipped cream and honey combination, and the fruit provides a sugar-rush that is similar to a candy sugar-rush, except that it is loaded with vitamins and minerals that are essential to your health. Plus, how cute are these parfaits? They are perfect to make for a Halloween party, or even just to eat throughout October if you find yourself craving a sweet treat. At a rate of 4-5 pieces of candy corn on each parfait, this is definitely a guilt-free snack that can be eaten multiple times throughout the month.
