Confused about Superfood Powders?
We’ve all been there, hearing from one person or another that their smoothie contained an endless amount of superfood powders, healthy foods, and whatever else rock-you-out-of-this-world ingredient. Now I’m all for having delicious foods and using various vitamins to enhance the benefits, however I realize that many people don’t understand why they are taking these products, how to take them properly or brands to buy from.
When I started my clean eating journey over two years ago, I had no idea what a superfood powder was. Truthfully, it seemed like another ‘gimmick’ to get you to purchase expensive things that you didn’t really need. I remember buying my first packet of spirulina and nearly died from the taste (I’m sure you’ve been there too!). It was only when I began mixing them into my porridge or smoothies was the taste acceptable- but I noticed something else! Along with my changing diet (going from one of too many cakes, chocolates and cookies to one of green smoothies, fruit, and no more restriction), I started feeling amazing. It seemed like there was something to these powders that I didn’t really understand. So I did my research and began learning what each one does for you and testing out all the various brands at Whole Foods (yes, I spent a lot of money doing this!).
Of all of the brands I tried, Organic Burst was the FIRST one I bought and my absolute favorite. Why? It started from the cool containers. Because I travel so often, these were the perfect containers to put in my bag and take with me to work, on holiday or in the car. I then realized that the taste was better in products such as the baoab and maca and later they released these amazing tablets which are just so convenient to take! - Superfood powders are something that has been around a LONG time. The Egyptians, Pharaohs, Inca and Aztec’s all used to use them to fuel their bodies when going out for long days to hunt game and find food.
- They are digested by the body much quicker than a pill (such as a multi-vitamin) allowing you to reap the benefits quickly.
- When taken in addition to a healthy diet, you will begin to see more energy, clearer skin, a regular digestive system and feel more vitalized.
When & why take Superfood Powders:
Energy: add 1tsp of Maca to your porridge, granola or smoothie. Studies have shown maca to increase energy, physical stamina and endurance.
Hydrate: add 1tsp of Baobab to your bottle of water and sip throughout the day. Baobab powder is super high in electrolytes – it has 5x more potassium than bananas. It’s also contains 6x more Vitamin C than oranges, which boosts collagen and hyaluronic acid production in the skin, making it radiant.
Detoxing: take 1tsp chlorella daily. Scientists have proven that taking chlorella dramatically increases the rate of regeneration and healing in all tissues, including your skin. As a result your skin grows new cells daily keeping it looking young and feeling elastic. Chlorella can also prevent hangovers because of it’s detoxing properties.
Post Workout: Add 1tsp Spirulina in your protein shake. Spirulina contains 60-70% protein, which is also 4x more absorbable than protein in beef! It helps the body recover quicker and reduces muscle pain.
